Realistically, the heaviest downpours will begin to impact northern Napa and Sonoma county towns like Healdsburg and Guerneville around 8 a.m. The North American weather model holds off on the heaviest rain bands rolling into Sonoma, Napa and Marin counties until after 11 a.m., while the high-res rapid refresh model spills them across the entire North Bay as early as 9 a.m. Baron Lynxĭepending on the timing of the cold front’s initial rain band, residents in the North Bay will begin to see isolated showers starting at 8 a.m. The North American weather model’s rendering of the cold front’s rain band, with the first round of showers and thunderstorms arriving in the North Bay by sunrise. This moisture will quickly condense and form a band of rain that will be sandwiched between the cold air to the northwest and the warmer air to its southeast - effectively becoming a physical harbinger of the cold front. By this morning, it will carry the bulk of it toward the coast. The cold front has been reeling in water vapor from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere. Those clouds were the precursors to today’s gloomy and overcast skies. Residents by the coast and along the Oakland Hills were treated to spectacular sunsets the past couple of evenings as puffy cumulus clouds made their way over the Bay Area.
